Hair loss & thinning in Reading
Shedding, thinning and the density you had five years ago. Treated at our salon in Caversham, Reading.
What causes it?
Hair loss has a long list of possible causes — hormonal, nutritional, thyroid, stress, autoimmune, traction from styling — and the honest starting point is working out which is yours, because the treatments do not overlap. Where the cause is nutritional, supporting the body properly makes a genuine difference. Where it is a pattern hair loss, that is medical territory. And where you want density back now rather than in nine months, extensions are the immediate answer while the underlying work happens.
Hair grows in cycles: a long growing phase, a short transitional one and a resting phase after which the hair sheds. Stress, illness, childbirth, crash dieting and thyroid dysfunction can push an unusually large proportion of follicles into the resting phase at once, producing the alarming shed that shows up two to three months after the event that caused it.
Nutritional deficiency is a common and correctable contributor: iron, vitamin D and B12 in particular. Pattern hair loss, by contrast, is hormonal and progressive, and needs a medical route rather than a salon one.
Signs to look out for
Most people who come to us about hair loss & thinning recognise several of these. You do not need all of them, and you do not need to know which treatment you want — that is our job.
- More hair in the brush, the shower or on the pillow than usual
- A widening parting rather than distinct bald patches
- A ponytail that feels visibly thinner than it did
- Shedding that started two to three months after illness or stress
- Hair that breaks mid-length rather than falling from the root
How we can help
These are the routes we would talk through at consultation, in the order we would usually consider them. Which one is right depends on your skin, your history and your budget.
Correct what is correctable
Changes in hair or nails can have many causes, so a biotin enquiry starts with an assessment of your symptoms, diet and any previous investigations. Biotin is not a guaranteed treatment for hair growth.
Restore density now
Extensions, fitted and blended properly, give immediate density while any underlying cause is addressed. Fitted badly they cause traction damage — which is why fitting matters more than the hair itself.
Rebuild the brow line
Where hair loss has affected the eyebrows, semi-permanent makeup restores shape convincingly and durably.
Not sure which of these is you?
You do not have to decide before you come in. Bring the problem and we will talk you through what could help and what it costs. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book anything.
What to expect over time
A realistic guide, including the stretch in the middle where it may not look like much is happening. Everyone responds differently, so your practitioner will talk you through your own timeline.
Month 1
Nothing visible. Hair works on a slow cycle and anyone promising faster is describing a fantasy.
Month 3
Shedding typically slows first. That is the earliest real signal.
Month 6
New growth visible at the root — short, fine regrowth along the parting.
Month 9 to 12
Density change becomes apparent. This is a long game.
Good to know
We are a salon, not a trichology or dermatology service. Sudden patchy loss, loss with scalp scaling or soreness, or loss alongside other symptoms needs a GP. Bloods for ferritin, thyroid and vitamin D are worth having before you spend anything with us. Biotin will not treat pattern hair loss, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Common questions
Will biotin regrow my hair?
It supports growth where deficiency is a factor. It does not treat hormonal pattern loss, and we will tell you which we think you have.
Do extensions damage your hair?
Fitted and maintained properly, no. Fitted too tightly or left too long, they cause traction loss. The fitting is the whole thing.
How soon will I see a difference?
Extensions, the same day. Anything working on the follicle, six months minimum.
Should I see my GP first?
Yes, if the shedding is sudden, patchy or comes with other symptoms. Go before you spend money here.
