Concern
Weak & splitting nails in Reading
Nails that break before they grow, and polish that never lasts the week. Treated at our salon in Caversham, Reading.
What causes it?
Nails that peel, split and never make it past the fingertip are usually being weakened faster than they can grow. The nail plate takes around six months to grow out fully, so damage you are seeing today was often done last winter. Two things change it: protecting the plate while it grows, which is what builder gel does properly, and correcting any nutritional shortfall underneath. Acrylic on already weak nails usually makes the problem worse.
The nail plate is layers of keratin bonded together. Repeated wetting and drying makes those layers separate, which is why peeling is so common in anyone whose hands are in water. Harsh removal — picking off gel, scraping, over-filing — takes layers off the surface directly.
Because a fingernail takes roughly six months to grow from matrix to free edge, improvement is slow and steady. There is no treatment that strengthens the nail already grown; you protect it and grow better nail behind it.
Signs to look out for
Most people who come to us about weak & splitting nails recognise several of these. You do not need all of them, and you do not need to know which treatment you want — that is our job.
- Layers peeling away from the free edge
- Nails that bend rather than hold their shape
- Splits appearing at the sides
- Never getting past the fingertip before breaking
- White patches or ridging after gel removal
How we can help
These are the routes we would talk through at consultation, in the order we would usually consider them. Which one is right depends on your skin, your history and your budget.
Protect the plate while it grows
Builder gel adds a flexible protective layer that moves with the nail rather than fighting it. Applied and removed correctly it lets weak nails grow out underneath.
Get the cuticle work right
Russian manicure technique gives a clean cuticle line and a better bond, which is what stops product lifting at the base and taking layers with it.
Support growth from within
Where nails, hair and skin are all poor together, that points to nutrition rather than technique.
Not sure which of these is you?
You do not have to decide before you come in. Bring the problem and we will talk you through what could help and what it costs. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book anything.
What to expect over time
A realistic guide, including the stretch in the middle where it may not look like much is happening. Everyone responds differently, so your practitioner will talk you through your own timeline.
Weeks 1 to 3
Protection in place. No breakage — which for some people is new.
Week 6
First real length gained, because nothing has snapped off.
Month 3
Half the plate is nail grown under protection.
Month 6
Fully grown out. This is when you find out what your natural nail is actually like.
Good to know
Acrylic on already weak nails is usually the wrong call. It is rigid, the nail underneath flexes, and the mismatch causes lifting and more damage. Most damage we see is from removal rather than application: picking gel off takes layers of nail with it every time. If your nails are weak, the removal appointment matters more than the application.

Common questions
Does builder gel damage nails?
Applied and soaked off properly, no. It protects them. Picked off, it does real damage.
How often do I need infills?
Your technician will suggest maintenance based on how quickly your nails grow.
Should I take a break from gel?
Not necessarily, if it is being removed properly. Breaks matter far less than removal technique.
Why do my nails look thin after removal?
Usually surface layers lost to over-filing or picking, not the gel itself. They recover as the plate grows out.
