Concern
Pores & rough texture in Reading
Enlarged pores and a surface that never feels smooth however much you exfoliate. Treated at our salon in Caversham, Reading.
What causes it?
A pore cannot be made permanently smaller. What you can change is how visible it is. Pores look larger when they are congested, when the skin around them has lost firmness, and when surface texture scatters light. Clearing the congestion, stimulating collagen to tighten the surrounding skin and smoothing the surface all reduce the appearance substantially. Genetics set your baseline; treatment moves you within it.
Pore size is largely inherited and tracks oil production: oilier skin has larger follicular openings. They appear bigger when filled with oil and dead cells, which stretches the opening and casts a shadow.
Age adds the second factor. As collagen around the follicle thins, the opening loses its support and elongates into a teardrop rather than a circle, which reads as larger even when it is not more congested.
Signs to look out for
Most people who come to us about pores & rough texture recognise several of these. You do not need all of them, and you do not need to know which treatment you want — that is our job.
- Pores most visible across the nose, inner cheeks and chin
- Texture that shows in daylight and in front-facing camera
- Makeup settling into individual pores through the day
- Blackheads returning within days of extraction
- Skin that feels rough rather than smooth to the touch
How we can help
These are the routes we would talk through at consultation, in the order we would usually consider them. Which one is right depends on your skin, your history and your budget.
Clear and smooth the surface
Dermaplaning removes the dead layer that widens the opening and makes the surface immediately smoother to the touch and to light.
Tighten the skin around the pore
Microneedling stimulates collagen in the tissue surrounding each follicle, which restores support and reduces apparent size over a course.
Resurface the texture properly
Tixel treats texture across the whole area with heat, improving pore appearance and fine lines together.
Not sure which of these is you?
You do not have to decide before you come in. Bring the problem and we will talk you through what could help and what it costs. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book anything.
What to expect over time
A realistic guide, including the stretch in the middle where it may not look like much is happening. Everyone responds differently, so your practitioner will talk you through your own timeline.
Immediately
Surface treatments show at once — smoother texture, better makeup.
Week 4
First collagen response from needling. Subtle.
Month 3
After a course, genuine and visible change in texture.
Ongoing
Maintenance every few months, plus homecare that keeps congestion down between visits.
Good to know
We will not tell you pores can be closed or removed. Anyone who does is not being straight with you. A realistic outcome is skin that looks smoother in daylight and photographs better. If your skin is very oily, that needs managing continuously rather than fixed once.

Common questions
Can pores be permanently shrunk?
No. Their appearance can be significantly improved, and that improvement needs maintaining.
Do pore strips help?
They pull out the top of a plug and leave the rest. Used often they irritate the skin and make things worse.
How many needling sessions?
It depends on the treatment. Your practitioner will recommend a plan at your consultation.
Will it help my blackheads?
Clearing and regulating congestion reduces them substantially. They will return without homecare. That is the nature of an oily skin type.
