Concern
Loose or sagging skin in Reading
Jowls, a softening jawline and skin that has lost its grip — the concern most people mean when they say they look tired. Treated at our salon in Caversham, Reading.
What causes it?
Sagging is rarely just loose skin. It is the combination of collagen thinning, the fat pads of the mid-face sliding downward, and the ligaments that hold them slackening, which is why creams do nothing for it. Real options split into tightening what is there (HIFU and radiofrequency, working beneath the surface of the skin), remodelling the skin quality itself (Profhilo), and physically repositioning tissue (PDO threads or structural filler). Most jaws need two of those three, in a planned order.
The face is not a balloon that deflates evenly. Distinct fat compartments sit in the cheeks and around the mouth, separated by ligaments. With age those ligaments lengthen, the compartments descend, and what was cheek volume becomes a jowl sitting on the jawline. At the same time the dermis thins and the skin has less recoil to hold anything up.
This is why a jowl is not fixed by filling the jowl. Putting volume into the sagging part makes it heavier. The result comes from lifting and supporting higher up the face, and from tightening the skin envelope.
Signs to look out for
Most people who come to us about loose or sagging skin recognise several of these. You do not need all of them, and you do not need to know which treatment you want — that is our job.
- A jawline that photographs less defined than it did
- Skin at the jaw that lifts when you tilt your head back
- Nose-to-mouth lines deepening without weight change
- Being told you look tired when you feel fine
- Foundation collecting along the jaw by evening
How we can help
These are the routes we would talk through at consultation, in the order we would usually consider them. Which one is right depends on your skin, your history and your budget.
Tighten at depth with focused ultrasound
HIFU uses focused ultrasound to stimulate a tissue response beneath the skin. It may help mild to moderate laxity, with results building gradually over the following months.
Remodel skin quality
Profhilo is not a filler. It spreads through the tissue and stimulates collagen and elastin, improving firmness in skin that has gone crepey. Your practitioner will explain the course and any maintenance.
Reposition with threads
PDO cog threads physically lift and hold tissue while dissolving over months, leaving collagen behind along the thread line. Best for early jowling in someone who does not want, or does not yet need, surgery.
Not sure which of these is you?
You do not have to decide before you come in. Bring the problem and we will talk you through what could help and what it costs. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book anything.
What to expect over time
A realistic guide, including the stretch in the middle where it may not look like much is happening. Everyone responds differently, so your practitioner will talk you through your own timeline.
Week 1
Little visible change from HIFU, and that is expected. Threads give an immediate lift with some tightness and possible bruising.
Week 6
Collagen response begins. This is where people start noticing the jaw in photographs rather than in the mirror.
Month 3
The bulk of the HIFU result is visible. We photograph at the same angle and lighting so you are comparing like with like, not memory.
Month 6 to 12
Peak result, then a slow return. Most people repeat annually rather than continuously.
Good to know
There is a point where non-surgical tightening stops being good value. If there is significant loose skin and heavy jowling, HIFU will give you a modest improvement and a facelift would give you a decade. We would rather tell you that than take three courses of payment. Equally, tightening will not help if the real issue is volume loss higher in the face, which is a different treatment entirely.

Common questions
Does HIFU hurt?
There is a deep, brief heat sensation as each line of energy is delivered. Most people describe it as very manageable and it is over in under an hour.
How soon will I see it?
Some tightening in weeks, the real result at three months. It is a collagen treatment, so it works on your body's timeline, not ours.
Are threads dangerous?
They are a medical procedure with real risks — bruising, puckering, rarely infection — and they need an experienced injector. That is exactly why we consult properly first.
Will one treatment be enough?
For HIFU, often yes for that year. For skin quality, no. Your practitioner will explain the Profhilo course and any maintenance. We will map the whole plan before you commit.
