Concern

Pigmentation & sun damage in Reading

Sun spots, melasma and uneven tone that makes skin look patchy in daylight. Treated at our salon in Caversham, Reading.

What causes it?

Pigmentation looks like one problem and is at least three. Sun damage sits shallow and responds well. Melasma is hormonal, sits deeper, and can be made considerably worse by aggressive heat or light treatment. Post-inflammatory marks left by spots fade on their own and simply need speeding up. Getting the diagnosis right before treating matters more here than in any other concern. The wrong approach on melasma sets you back months.

Melanocytes produce pigment in response to a trigger: ultraviolet light, heat, inflammation or hormones. Sun damage accumulates over decades and surfaces as discrete brown spots. Melasma appears as larger, softer-edged patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip, and is driven by hormones — pregnancy, the pill — with sunlight as the accelerant.

Melasma is the one to be careful with. It is chronic, it relapses, and heat alone can trigger it. Anyone promising to clear it permanently is either misinformed or not being straight with you.

Signs to look out for

Most people who come to us about pigmentation & sun damage recognise several of these. You do not need all of them, and you do not need to know which treatment you want — that is our job.

  • Distinct brown spots on the areas that catch most sun
  • Softer, larger patches across the cheeks or upper lip
  • Pigment that darkens noticeably every summer
  • Marks left behind after spots or ingrown hairs
  • Tone that looks patchy in daylight but fine under warm indoor light

How we can help

These are the routes we would talk through at consultation, in the order we would usually consider them. Which one is right depends on your skin, your history and your budget.

1

Lift surface pigment with peels

A course of chemical peels accelerates turnover and disperses pigment sitting in the upper layers. Depth is chosen to suit your skin type — going too deep on darker skin risks worsening the problem.

2

Treat it as a planned programme

Our pigmentation course combines in-salon treatment with the homecare and sun protection that actually determines whether the result holds.

3

Resurface where texture is involved too

Where sun damage has brought texture change as well as colour, Tixel treats both at once.

Not sure which of these is you?

You do not have to decide before you come in. Bring the problem and we will talk you through what could help and what it costs. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book anything.

What to expect over time

A realistic guide, including the stretch in the middle where it may not look like much is happening. Everyone responds differently, so your practitioner will talk you through your own timeline.

1

Week 1

Pigment often darkens before it lifts as it moves to the surface. Expected, and temporary.

2

Week 3

Flaking done, tone visibly more even.

3

Month 2 to 3

The course delivers. Photographs in consistent lighting are the only honest measure.

4

Ongoing

Daily SPF, permanently. Without it the pigment returns and the money was wasted — this is not an upsell, it is the whole treatment.

Good to know

If it is melasma, we will manage expectations hard. It is controllable, not curable, it relapses in sunlight and pregnancy, and aggressive treatment can worsen it. We would rather treat you conservatively over longer than sell you a fast course that rebounds. Any pigmented lesion that is changing shape, colour or size goes to your GP before it goes anywhere near us.

Common questions

Can you get rid of it completely?

Sun damage, often largely. Melasma, no. It is managed. We will tell you which you have at consultation.

Will it come back?

Without daily sun protection, yes. With it, results hold well.

Is it safe on darker skin?

With the right depth and the right practitioner, yes. The wrong peel on darker skin can cause exactly the pigmentation you came in to treat, which is why we assess first.

Can I have it while pregnant?

We would wait. Pregnancy hormones drive melasma, and results achieved during it rarely hold.
