Concern
Muscle tension & pain in Reading
Desk shoulders, a stiff neck, and the tightness that has been there for months. Treated at our salon in Caversham, Reading.
What causes it?
Persistent neck, shoulder and back tension is usually postural load rather than injury: the same muscles holding the same position for hours, day after day, until they stop releasing. Massage works because it interrupts that: it increases circulation to tissue that has become ischaemic, releases the trigger points that refer pain elsewhere, and drops the nervous system out of the state that keeps the muscle switched on. Depth of pressure should match the problem, not prove a point.
A muscle held in partial contraction for long periods restricts its own blood supply. Waste products accumulate, the tissue becomes sensitised, and taut bands with palpable trigger points form. Those points refer pain, which is why a knot between the shoulder blades produces a headache behind the eye.
Desk posture, driving and phone use all load the same chain: upper trapezius, levator scapulae and the muscles at the base of the skull. That is why tension headaches and a stiff neck arrive together.
Signs to look out for
Most people who come to us about muscle tension & pain recognise several of these. You do not need all of them, and you do not need to know which treatment you want — that is our job.
- Tightness across the tops of the shoulders that never fully goes
- Headaches that begin at the base of the skull
- Reduced range when turning your head to reverse a car
- Pain that worsens through the working week and eases at weekends
- Knots you can feel through the skin
How we can help
These are the routes we would talk through at consultation, in the order we would usually consider them. Which one is right depends on your skin, your history and your budget.
Target the area directly
A focused thirty minutes on back, neck and shoulders is the most efficient treatment for desk-related tension, and easy to fit into a working day.
Work the deeper layers
Deep tissue massage reaches beyond the superficial muscle for chronic, long-standing tightness. Expect to feel it the next day.
Something gentler that still helps
Swedish massage works at a lighter pressure and suits anyone who finds deep tissue too much, or who wants circulation and general release rather than one area worked hard.
Not sure which of these is you?
You do not have to decide before you come in. Bring the problem and we will talk you through what could help and what it costs. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to book anything.
What to expect over time
A realistic guide, including the stretch in the middle where it may not look like much is happening. Everyone responds differently, so your practitioner will talk you through your own timeline.
Immediately after
Looser, and often slightly light-headed. Drink water.
Next day
Deep tissue work can leave you feeling as though you have trained. That is normal and passes in a day or two.
Days 3 to 7
The real benefit — range of movement back, headaches reduced.
Ongoing
For postural tension, monthly maintenance holds it. Without changing what causes it, the tension returns — we will talk about that too.
Good to know
Massage manages postural tension; it does not fix a workstation. If the cause is eight hours at a badly set-up desk, monthly treatment is maintenance rather than cure. Pain radiating down an arm or leg, pins and needles, or any weakness needs medical assessment before massage, not instead of it. We will decline and refer.

Common questions
Does deep tissue have to hurt?
No. It should be intense but manageable, and you should be able to breathe through it. Pain causes guarding, which defeats the purpose.
How often should I come?
Fortnightly while settling something chronic, then monthly.
Will one session fix it?
One session gives real relief. Tension built over years takes a course, plus changing whatever is causing it.
Can I have massage while pregnant?
Yes, from the second trimester, with proper positioning and support. We offer that specifically.
Other concerns we treat
Ready to talk it through?
Bring the problem, not the treatment name. Consultations are free and carry no obligation.
